soap on a rope
When Shayne Oliver approached me and the PIN-UP Home team about a possible collaboration, he knew that he wanted to create an object that would subvert fashion iconography—playing with ephemerality, portability, and the body. I was immediately reminded of the traditional “soap on a rope,” which struck a balance between a kitschy nostalgia and straight forward practicality, all while recalling commercial fragrance and beauty ads of the early 2000s. Both the design and campaign had to bridge the world of fashion and utility, blurring the lines between a jewelry piece and everyday object. The thickness of the cotton rope was specifically chosen to recall a necklace, while the soap’s scale and shape ensure it can be just as easily slotted into a shower shelf as hung from a peg.
