Barbie Dreamhouse

A 150-page book that serves both as a comprehensive documentation of the history of the Barbie Dreamhouse and an examination of the cultural and political implications of its domestic fantasies. The evolution of Barbie’s interiors reflects changing tastes, aesthetics, and design trends, framing the dollhouse as a serious cultural object. Detailed architectural plans and still-life imagery introduce a sense of anthropological rigor and gravity, balanced with the inherent playfulness of the subject. Published by Mattel in collaboration with PIN–UP.

“In the design landscape in postwar America, which Barbie enters in 1962, there were many ways both architects and consumers were acting like children, always playing house.”
— Beatriz Colomina
